Boosting Your Metabolism - Part 23 - Common Metabolism-Boosting Myths

Myth No. 3: Low Intensity Workouts

It’s fair to say that any exercise is better than no exercise. So if you lead a sedentary lifestyle, then even walking around your block for 10 minutes a day is going to do something positive for your body and its metabolism.

True, that difference may be imperceptible to the naked eye (or it may not?), but the bottom line is that exercise is good. This being said, some people believe that they should perform low-intensity workouts even when they could be performing more high-intensity workouts. For example, instead of jogging for 20 minutes with their heart at the top end of their aerobic zone, they opt for low-intensity jogs that barely break a sweat.

Low intensity workouts simply don’t lead to a faster metabolism; they can’t. Remember, as we discussed very early in this blog, metabolism is a process. And that process is really one of two types: taking energy and making cells (anabolism), or breaking cells down to make energy (catabolism).

If you don’t achieve a high-intensity workout, then your body can’t achieve catabolism; it won’t need to. So the only way your body is going to go and break down existing cells is if it needs to.

So keep this in mind as you exercise, either at home or at a gym. Low intensity workouts are better than nothing at all; and they may be necessary if you’re recovering from injury, or just starting out on the exercise journey.

But once you reach a level of basic fitness, only high intensity (aerobic) workouts will make a difference in terms of your metabolism. High intensity workouts force your body to find energy to help you maintain that level of exercise; and it does so through catabolism.

Next time we’ll cover Myth No. 4, and why too much focus can put up a barrier between yourself and the body you always wanted.

See you then

Best wishes

EASY WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT – THE 5 GOLDEN RULES

It’s little wonder why so many women are looking for easy ways to lose weight, because most of us know that losing it is one of the best things we can do to improve our health and overall levels of wellbeing. The benefits are enormous, including lowering our blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as our risk of diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer to name but a few.

But for many, the real attraction is to have benefits that can actually be seen – knowing how great you will look in that killer dress you always fancied, or perhaps having the courage to tie that sarong a foot lower next time you are on holiday!

Ok, so you may have decided you want to find easy ways to lose weight, but with so many different weight-loss programmes out there, it is pretty daunting knowing how to pick the right one, isn’t it? Well, the good news is that just by using some of the following Golden Rules, you will be able to weed out the ones that won’t work for you, and be on the best possible start for your journey.

Golden Rule No.1: A single magic weight-loss programme that works for anyone is rare, and the very simple reason for this is because not everyone is looking for the same thing. Slashing a few unwanted pounds just before you go away on holiday requires a very different approach than for someone who wants to change their life and lose several stone permanently. Be very clear with yourself about what you want to achieve.

Golden Rule No.2: Although there are a few exceptions, generally ‘quick’ and ‘easy’ do not go well together, The chances are that if you need to lose weight ‘quickly’ you are going to be asked to make some fairly major and radical changes to your life, and a very good chance that is not going to be very ‘easy’!

If all you want to do is lose a few pounds quickly before you go on holiday, there is nothing wrong with this approach, as long as you accept your weight loss will only last as long as your resolve to turn you life upside down does!

Golden Rule No.3: If you want to lose a substantial amount of weight permanently, losing it at a slow, steady rate is the best way to go – a loss of 1-2 pounds each week is ideal. Be honest with yourself – if you have to make radical changes to your life that you know you could never live with on a permanent basis, then it is hardly surprising if you do not get a permanent result.

Golden Rule No.4: Do not ignore your mind! Although there are various reasons why you may have put weight on in the first place, the majority of poor food choices and eating habits are often as a result of your emotional state and the relationship your mind has formed with food. Any weight-loss programme that does not help your mind to form a healthy relationship with food is unlikely to give you a permanent result, because good old fashioned will-power just does not work!

Golden Rule No.5: Do not be afraid to look for help and support. Any weight-loss programme that just offers a sale without telling you much about it first should be viewed with caution. If it is that good and gives you permanent results, they will be happy to give you plenty of free help before you start, and ideally some support once you do. Check out my profile for a good example of this.
